Dept: Live Local Georgia

Back-to-School in Green Style
Earlier this year, the DeKalb County School System (DCSS) revealed to the DeKalb Board of Education its plans to go green. Plans include purchasing eco-friendly cleaning products and practicing proper disposal, installing high efficiency lighting in every facility for energy efficiency, and moving toward water conservation with faucet aerators and the education of staff and students about water conserving behaviors. And, starting this school year, on August 1, DCSS will begin implementation of a system-wide recycling plan, also part of their greening initiative. Used paper and plastic items will be collected from schools and administrative offices through recycling bins.

DeKalb’s greening efforts go hand-in-hand with the district’s new partnership with The Clean Air Campaign. DCSS is the first school system in the state and the nation to develop a comprehensive partnership with The Clean Air Campaign.

More thorough information on DeKalb’s plans for going green can be found on the Plant Services and Operations Department website at www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/administration/operations/index.html.
