Big
Time Thank Yous
NLJ Interviews
Ted Williams
Editor’s Note: This
is a reprint of a traditional Thanksgiving prayer
that was a gift from Ted to our readers in the October
2003 issue of New Life Journal. Ted was released to
the sky people from this realm with beauty, grief,
and celebration in late September of this year. This
prayer lives on as one of his greatest gifts. Ted
was a ritual leader who was asked to share this prayer
at gatherings all over this country. We are lucky
to be perhaps the only publication ever to have printed
this prayer in the English language. This gift comes
from a true elder: treasure it, pray it, pass it on.
This is for you, Ted: three times three times three
big time thank yous.

Creative Gift Giving:
Natural Body Care
By Tina Glenn
The holiday season
is coming up, and one of the best gifts we can give
each other is the opportunity to be pampered. Everyone
deserves to be treated well. There are many options
available to indulge others; my favorite way to be
spoiled is to treat the mind and body to a good relaxing
bath time.
A wonderful bath doesn’t require high cost products.
Good quality ingredients can be found locally, and
your thoughtfulness and a bit of time will allow your
loved ones to take care of themselves at home with
natural body care products that you create.

BREATHE IN
The Simple Pleasures
of Aromatherapy
By Jennifer Charlton
Stress is an inevitable part of our modern existence.
Though it is unrealistic to think it can be completely
eradicated, there are ways to tame the beast. Aromatherapy
is a simple and pleasurable way to make the most of
the moments we take for ourselves. A small selection
of pure essential oils is all that’s necessary
to begin; lavender, rosemary, peppermint, and geranium
offer many possibilities. Be sure to obtain the real
oils in their concentrated, unadulterated form, and
not the synthetic versions or those already diluted
in jojoba or another carrier oil. The words “pure
essential oil” should be on the packaging and
the price will vary from oil to oil. An essential
oil is distilled directly from the leaves, flowers,
stems and/or roots of the plant. When waved under
the nose, the scent should be exactly that of the
plant from which it came, with all its complexity
and fullness.

Laughter Medicine
By Michele
Horvath
Our most recent American tragedies have been very
close-to-home disasters on the Gulf Coast. Third World
countries face the challenges being confronted in
Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas every day...For
those of you who don’t know, Ellen DeGeneres
started out as a stand-up comic, developed her own
talk show and recently performed for an HBO special.
She started this episode talking about the heart-wrenching
tragedy we are witnessing on the Gulf Coast and offering
up her suggestion—that, between moments of paying
attention to the pain in the world, you take a break
from facing these sobering issues to find laughter.
How can I take her advice and learn to lighten up?
